The building of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR being built in 1948-1957 is the monument of the architecture. It is inserted into “The State List of the monuments of history and culture of the Kazakh SSR of the Republic significance. / The Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR dated 26th of January,1982 # 38,and it’s under the protection of the state.The building complex of the NAN RK is situated in Almaty city, Shevchenko str.,28,and occupies the square of the streets Shevchenko- Kurmangazy-Kunaev- Pushkin with the agrarian plot area 3,0906 hectares.
At the present time in the building complex function the Central Scientific Library of the MES RK, 18 scientific research institutions and 3 educational syllabus organizations.
The building complex of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR – it’s a tremendous architectural ensemble, which was begun built in 1948 and accomplished in 1957 year. An exclusive service of the erection of the main scientific republic headquarter belongs to the first president of the AS Kanysh Imantaevich Satpaev. K. I. Satpaev devoted himself to the elaborations and wordings of the basic principles of the development of the Academy of Sciences in the whole, and its separate scientific institutions in future, in particular, to the question of the territorial placing of the whole complex. Kanysh Imantaevich intended the building the Academy of Sciences to reflect all the grandeur of the human thought, the scale of the scientific tasks in the Republic.
The general complex designer became the outstanding architect –the architecture luminary, the skilled craftsman, an academician Alexey Victorovich Shchusev, the author of many splendid constructions, in particular, of the Lenin Mausoleum in Moscow. The head of the working group from the leading architecture designers became the prominent specialist in that sphere, an engineer A.I. Prostakov. Mainly the Japanese prisoners were used as the manpower.
The classical themes and stylish elements of the national ornaments are used in the architecture of building. In the eastern part of the complex wing of the Academy of Sciences is the Nature Museum. It’s one of the subdivisions of the Institute of Zoology. To visit the Museum is possible via the Main entrance of the Academy of Sciences. An exposition of the Museum opens slightly an ancient curtain of the time, and introduces the visitors to the mysterious world of the paleontology and zoology.
In the right wing of the building is placed the Central Scientific Library with 5, 3 millions fund units storage, occupying two complex pavilions with the standardized buildings- book depository.
In the 60s-70s of the past century were carried out the further works on the architecture ensemble formation. The area of the Academy of Sciences was arousen by the unity of the architectural and plastic solutions, thanking to the construction of 8-metred Chokan Valikhanov’s monument, the Kazakh scientist of ethnography of the 19th century. A bronze-cast figure towered above the pedestal from the black gabbro, the fountains, the buildings of the Institute of chemistry, metallurgy and concentration form the wonderful architectural ensemble. In the public garden, from the eastern side of the Academy of Sciences of the Pushkin street is an interesting fountain “The Oriental Calendar”, erected in 1979.Allegorical,bronze-cast figures reflect the characters of the oriental calendar, and are the model of the civil architecture.
The building of the Academy of Sciences by planning is split into 11 pavilions, in 9 of which are placed the official and working buildings of the institutes, of the Central Scientific Library. In the third pavilion are placed the Central entrance hall, the cloak-room, the Conference Hall, and the other buildings of the common use.
